Dams and reservoirs have long played a crucial role in water security, flood control, irrigation, hydropower generation, and sustainable development. As global water demand increases due to population growth, climate change, and economic expansion, these infrastructures remain essential for managing water resources efficiently. They provide a stable water supply for agriculture, industry, and domestic use while supporting energy production and mitigating the impacts of extreme hydrological events such as droughts and floods.
However, the environmental and social impacts of large dam projects have led to debates over their long-term sustainability. Disruptions to river ecosystems, displacement of communities, and sedimentation-related issues pose significant challenges to dam operations and maintenance. In response, modern engineering approaches focus on improving dam efficiency, minimizing ecological disruptions, and integrating multi-purpose designs that enhance sustainability.
This review explores the role of dams and reservoirs in ensuring water security, their contributions to sustainable development, and the challenges associated with their construction and operation. Additionally, emerging trends in dam engineering, ecological restoration, and alternative water storage methods—such as underground reservoirs, rainwater harvesting, and nature-based solutions—are discussed to highlight the future of water resource management. The adoption of innovative technologies, adaptive policies, and community-driven approaches will be crucial in balancing the benefits of dams with environmental conservation and social equity in the coming decades.
