Social Information Processing and Group Cohesiveness in Manufacturing Firms in Nigeria

The study seeks to established an empirical relationship between social information processing and group cohesiveness. The study adopted a cross sectional survey design to elicit responses from managers, unit supervisors and senior staff in the departments of Human resources, marketing, operation and finance in a number of Nigerian manufacturing firms, using purposive sampling technique. After data sorting, only data of 132 respondents were finally used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics and Spearman's rank correlation were used for data analysis and hypothesis testing. Empirical findings revealed that there is a positive significant relationship between social information processing and group cohesiveness in manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The study thus concluded that social information processing has a positive and significant influence on group cohesiveness. We recommend that manufacturing firms in Nigeria should adopt social information processing as a strategy to enable them increase their level of group cohesiveness. The study also recommended that managers need to direct their attention and investment to socially intelligent behaviours and actions.
