Abstract

In the ever-evolving landscape of global economics, a paradigm shift towards sustainable development is imperative. Despite the apparent prosperity reflected in high per capita incomes in developed countries, indicators of life satisfaction and happiness have shown limited improvement. This article explores the intersection of economic policies, environmental considerations, and societal well-being. Drawing inspiration from Mahaveer’s principles of restraint in consumption, the paper proposes a reevaluation of current economic strategies and outlines a potential roadmap for a more balanced and sustainable future. The article advocates for wholistic development planning, urging policymakers to transcend traditional economic metrics and consider qualitative measures such as happiness and overall satisfaction. It stresses inclusivity in policies, particularly for vulnerable sections of society, and calls for a societal and psychological impact assessment. Addressing challenges in development planning, the article explores the divergent priorities between developed and developing countries, the discrepancies in satisfaction despite rising incomes, and the lack of consensus on global development goals. It underscores the impact of advertisements and consumerism, conflicting economic transitions in developing nations, and the need for a long-term development perspective. In the final sections, the article concludes with a call for sustainable development and future directions. It advocates for a rethinking of economic development, emphasizing a relative income approach and the need for a harmonious relationship between human beings and nature. The concept of sustainable development is explored, and alternatives, including the adoption of Relative Economics, are proposed. The article acknowledges the prevailing crisis of confidence and proposes initiatives to rebuild trust, promoting fairness, honesty, and traditional values. Relative Economics, rooted in Lord Mahaveer’s vision, is presented as a transformative force guiding the way towards a harmonious and sustainable future. The journey, it asserts, begins with individual changes, gradually shaping collective understanding and opinions.
