Abstract

Financial derivatives have become central to global finance, serving as instruments for hedging,
speculation, and efficient risk allocation. As markets evolve, derivatives play a critical role in
mitigating various forms of financial risk—credit, market, operational, and liquidity—across
corporate, institutional, and governmental sectors. This review synthesises the conceptual
foundations, practical applications, regulatory developments, and emerging trends in the use of
financial derivatives for risk mitigation. It also identifies the challenges and policy implications
that accompany their growing prominence, highlighting a need for transparency, innovation, and
global coordination in derivative markets.
