Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on India's economic environment, which has led to significant interruptions in economic activity in addition to the loss of human life. The coronavirus pandemic is the worst thing that has happened to the world in the previous year, and India is taking action against COVID-19 by enacting a lockdown that requires people to stay inside and isolate themselves starting on March 25, 2020, along with other countries across the world. The repercussions of the 53-day lockdown on India are being felt throughout the country's economy, albeit to varying degrees of intensity and with unknown results. It is noteworthy that the service sector accounts for around half of India's GDP and that the initial wave of the COVID-19 strike had a particularly negative effect on it. The purpose of this essay is to assess the effect that COVID-19 would have on the Indian economy's retail sector. Due to the large number of workers who are employed in casual work, which makes up about a quarter of India's total workforce, the unorganised retail sector, also known as the informal sector, must be taken into consideration for its contribution to GDP.  This descriptive essay is based on information and sources that have already been published. Due to the huge Coronavirus outbreak and the following shutdown, India is currently running substantial trade deficits. Over 10 crore workers in the unorganised and informal sector have lost their jobs as a result of the ongoing massive lock-down brought on by COVID-19. It's estimated that India's trade crisis might be valued as much as $348 million. Undoubtedly, the government has put in place a variety of initiatives meant to encourage the retail industry's expansion; nevertheless, in order for retailers to successfully combat COVID-19, they must also modify their business plans to take into account evolving market dynamics.
