Abstract

The phenomenon of brain drain, as analysed by various researchers, including Young (2020) and Jain (2018), highlights the migration of skilled individuals from economically unstable home countries to more prosperous host nations, seeking better opportunities and stability. This exodus has significant repercussions for countries like India, which faces a substantial loss of intellectual capital, leading to skill deficits and hindering domestic innovation and economic growth. Cherian's (2019) statistics underline India's leading position in global emigration, with a notable presence in the Middle East, while Mukunthan & Nagaraj (2017) emphasise the growing unemployment rates exacerbating this trend. Factors driving brain drain include higher education opportunities abroad, unfavourable domestic employment conditions, lack of research funding, and favourable migration policies of developed countries. The socioeconomic consequences, as discussed by Sankpal & Naik (2015), include a widening social gap, development crises, and a decline in competitiveness. Despite some positive aspects, such as increased remittances and the potential for reverse brain drain, the overall impact on India's economy and innovation capacity is detrimental. Effective government intervention is crucial to curb this talent drain and harness the potential of its skilled workforce.
