Relevance of Cottage Industries in India: An Empirical and Policy Oriented Assessment

Abstract

Cottage industries have been a vital part of India’s socio-economic fabric for centuries. Traditionally, they have provided employment, preserved cultural heritage and supported rural livelihoods. In this age of fast industrialisation, globalisation and technological innovation, their significance is sometimes questioned. This article discusses the present day relevance of cottage industries in India and looks into their impact in employment generation particularly in rural and semi-urban areas and their influence in sustainable and inclusive economic development. It also talks about how government initiatives, digital marketplaces and increased customer preference for handmade and eco-friendly items have revived this sector.
