Abstract

Refugees globally continue to confront myriad challenges, with international bodies such as the United Nations (UN) struggling to devise tangible solutions. This discussion paper delves into the prevailing refugee crisis, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies. The keywords shaping this discourse are Refugees, World, Crisis, and Poverty. The United Nations, since 1951, has outlined resolutions and protocols advocating for the rights of refugees, yet global challenges persist, revealing a gap between intention and implementation. This discussion paper examines the multifaceted refugee crisis, emphasizing inadequacies in the global response and the need for collaborative solutions. Despite India’s general policy of ensuring a dignified life for refugees, it has not signed UN resolutions. The paper explores the global refugee crisis, encompassing challenges like inadequate shelter, healthcare disparities, educational barriers, legal issues, employment restrictions, social integration challenges, family separation, and lack of legal recourse. Focusing on the unique refugee situation in India, particularly those from Pakistan, the paper delves into the historical complexities and challenges faced by refugees, such as unemployment, lack of education, and restricted land ownership. The prolonged delay in granting citizenship intensifies their predicament, affecting economic stability, educational opportunities, and psychological well-being. The consequences of delayed citizenship extend to economic hardships, limited access to education, barriers to land ownership, and psychological distress. To address these challenges, the paper proposes solutions including legal and administrative support, land allocation, financial assistance, skill training, citizenship rights, social integration programs, and international collaboration. Recognizing the unique Indian context, the paper emphasizes the need for tailored strategies considering historical, cultural, and demographic dimensions. The conclusion underscores the importance of strong political will, administrative support, and reframing the refugee issue as an administrative challenge. Implementing proposed solutions can break the cycle of despair, empowering refugees to lead dignified lives. The paper calls for a global united response to build a more just and compassionate world, where refugees are not abandoned but empowered to contribute meaningfully to host societies.
