Study of Air and Noise Quality Variation during Diwali Festival

Abstract

A firecracker is a small explosive device primarily designed to produce a large amount of noise, especially in the form of a loud bang; any visual effect is incidental to this goal. They have fuses, and are wrapped in a heavy paper casing to contain the explosive compound Fireworks are made up of harmful chemicals such as potassium nitrate, carbon and sulphur apart from an array of chemicals such as strontium, barium, sodium, titanium, zirconium, magnesium alloys, copper and aluminum powder which make it one of the most potential sources of air pollution. The reckless use of fireworks was found to be related to short-term variation and long-term variation in air quality of Delhi (28.6139° N, 77.2090° E). These variation episodes during diwali are major causes for high concentrations of pollutants (especially metals, organic compound and gases). In the paper the ambient concentrations of air pollutants (Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Oxides of Nitrogen as NO2, Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) and carbon monoxide) during Diwali have been compared to the data of a typical day in Delhi, October 2016. The data reveals that the concentration of pollutants as well as noise parameters was observed at few sites. The trend shows that pollutants concentration increased just before Diwali and reached to a maximum concentration on the day of the Diwali festival. The results indicate that fireworks during the Diwali festival affected the ambient air quality adversely due to emission, dispersion and accumulation of air pollutants.
