Abstract

Sustainable engineering design methodology strategies involve multi-layered interactions between social, economic, and environmental factors that require heterogeneous solutions. Focusing on the ambitious government affordable housing in Nairobi City, Kenya, characterized by a fast-growing urban population and massive cost of construction for the building sector, it is imperative that new sustainable and robust strategies are promptly recommended. For this purpose, this present review seeks to analyze sustainable strategies employed in achieving the affordable housing program in Nairobi City while paying closer attention to quality and costs, environmental impact, safety to inhabitants, and the role of promoting local economies by using built-on-site and off-site materials. The review also encompasses a proposal on civil engineering design as well as a technology to predict its failures for counter-actions.
