Abstract

The waste material has been successfully used in the construction of road pavement in many developed countries. This paper focuses on studying the recycle of waste material as recycled concrete aggregate(RCA) and aluminium filings (AF) as an alternative to coarse and fine aggregate in hot asphalt mixture, whereby to reduce the environmental pollution and to achieve sustainability. Mix ratio using waste material was designed by Marshall Stability Method. Fur mix design was adopted in this study RCA retained on sieve No.9.5mm was used as12% replacement of coarse aggregate, AF retained on sieve no.50 was used as 15% fine aggregate replacement, 25% of AF retained on sieve No.50 was used as 15% replacement of fine aggregate, and the fourth mix was 12% of RCA and 15% of AF retain on sieve No.50. It was then compared with hot asphalt mixtures contained limestone dust type of filler. Results demonstrated that the use of recycled concrete aggregate as a total replacement of coarse aggregate and Aluminium filings as a partial replacement of fine aggregate is viable and can be used in the production of the hot asphalt mixture. However, the hot asphalt mixtures containing different waste materials such as RCA and AF gave Marshall Properties similar to conventional hot asphalt mixtures. Furthermore, Marshall test indicates maximum Marshall Stability obtained for mixtures with RCA is 12.99 kN, 12.1kN for mixtures with RCA & A.F and 9.97, 9.75 kN for mixtures with A.F (50,25%) respectively.
