Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way software is planned, designed, developed, tested, deployed, and maintained. AI-based systems can help developers write code, complete code, find bugs, test software, prepare documents, understand requirements, review code, find security problems, and estimate project work. Generative AI and machine-learning techniques have made these capabilities more accessible through natural-language interfaces and intelligent development tools. This research paper examines the role of AI throughout the software development life cycle (SDLC), with particular attention to its benefits, limitations, and responsible use. The paper proposes an AI-assisted software development framework in which AI tools support developers while humans remain responsible for requirements, validation, architectural decisions, security, and final acceptance. It also discusses risks such as inaccurate generated code, security vulnerabilities, privacy concerns, bias, intellectual-property questions, over-reliance on automated suggestions, and the need for explainability and human oversight. The study concludes that AI can improve developer productivity and software quality when it is used with good software practices, testing, security checks, and proper risk management.
