Flat Weld Bead Geometry Control of Fillet Welds Made By Submerged Arc Welding
Keywords:

Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) has been extensively used for making fillet welds in flat and horizontal positions. The welding arc is totally submerged in granular flux and hence nothing of the process is visible, therefore the process parameters have to be set in advance to obtain the desired weld bead geometry. In this paper a study has been made to develop mathematical models to control the weld bead geometry parameters for the flat fillet welds. The control parameters like open circuit voltage (V),wire feed rate (F), welding speed (S), electrode to work angle(?), nozzle to plate distance (N) have been correlated with weld bead geometry parameters viz. leg length(a),throat thickness (T) and weld-bead-toe width (W) and a derived shape relationship fillet aspect (W/T). The material used is C-Mn steel and automatic SAW machine of KEARC make has been used.
