Abstract

Soil Structure Interaction (SSI) can significantly modify the seismic behaviour of structures. Particularly, critical buildings need to be designed in order to take into account its effects. In case of residential structures SSI effects are not always considered extensively. This can result in non-conservative evaluations of the mutual behaviour of the structure and the soil. For base-isolated structures, SSI can reduce the benefit of isolation that can become detrimental in some cases. This paper aims to perform several benchmark buildings both traditional and based-isolated in order to evaluate the role of SSI on base isolation technique. 3D numerical simulations are performed with OpenSeesPL. This software is implemented within the FE (Finite Element) code OpenSees. The paper presents nine structural configurations founded on four deformable soils.
