Abstract

The rapid growth of urban populations has created significant challenges in managing infrastructure, resources, and services efficiently. Smart city development has emerged as a transformative approach to address these challenges by leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and advanced digital infrastructure. This paper explores the role of IoT in enabling smart urban systems, including transportation, energy management, waste management, and public safety. It examines the architecture of smart cities, focusing on sensor networks, communication technologies, and data analytics platforms. The study also highlights key opportunities such as improved efficiency, sustainability, and enhanced quality of life, while addressing critical challenges including data security, privacy concerns, scalability, and high implementation costs. The findings suggest that while IoT-driven smart cities offer immense potential, careful planning, robust infrastructure, and policy frameworks are essential for successful implementation.
